European Waste Catalogue (EWC)

How waste is defined and classified

The European Waste Catalogue (EWC) is a set of codes that allows waste to be classified according to its industry and/or origin.

The reference legislation is Directive 75/442/EEC, whose definition of waste is expressed as follows: “any substance or object in the categories set out in Annex I, which the holder discards, intends to dispose of or is required to do so”

The EWC codes, in force since 1 January 2002, are set out in the Ministry of the Environment Directive dated 9 April 2002, published in ordinary supplement no. 102 to the Official Gazette no. 108 dated 10 May 2002 and subsequent amendments and additions – General Series.

The list below is complete with both non-hazardous and hazardous waste codes, differentiated by an asterisk *

Our staff will be happy to provide further information on the correct way to handle and dispose of waste.
